GROW talks: Futurist farming #futurefarming
Liveblogging, quotes just roughly accurate…
On water
Water use grows, pumping groundwater occurs above the sustainable level
Big problems in India and China
The ‘cloud’ are lots of computers in buildings.
Refining/growing ethanol uses water.
Corn needs to be irrigated.
120 liters of water for one liter of ethanol.
There is a “global farms Race” (book)
40+ acres of land are lost every day on the rims of cities.
This is accompanied by deforstation.
Solutions: – Conversation – Reuse: It’s only wastewater because we don’t know how to use it – Desale: expensive – improved efficiency (sub surface irrigation) – genetic enigineering (takes 10 years to ertify a new organism, excludes smaller companies…, no universities…) – Price (book: Unquenchable): era of delocation of water
Chris Lewicki
Planetary resources
Regular and reliable information about planet’s resources including growth in farms
lots of data, but local and ‘trapped’.
existing space based systems have been repurposed, but they are not optimised for this
We measure from space and try to scale on a global level to provide information.
Needed:
low cost options to bring private sensors into space
This is what we try to provide.
Investors: LarryPage, Richard Branson, Govt of Luxemburg
Rich Data Sets & machine learning, we have no data sets yet.
Thermographic and (???) imaging
measurements day AND night (not on the market today)
detection for crop stress
hyperspectral imaging : more information on crop conditions
measuring makes managing possible and decreases ecological footprint
BAYER is a R&D partner: decision support engine
Seattle & Luxemburg
we can build the needed spacecraft and all the IP is ours.
2 initial spacecraft are awaiting launch
affordable information for growers
VC Fund focusing on food innovation
Transform the food value chain
secure, safe, sustainable
we need to produce mre food in the next 40 years than we poduced in the last 8000 years
if a sector doe snot innovate the innovation weill come from outside
Long adoption ccyles: a farmer makes 40 major decisions in his lifetime about crops/investments
so this is no typical field for VCs
not many experienced entrepreneurs in this field
the scope is global -> complexity
4 years ago almist no VC activity in this field, now 4.6 bn Dollars
50% go into last mile delivery
5% go into drones (by guess, OG)
AG is 10% of global GDP but only 3.5% of VC capital goes there
(healthcare is 12% and 12% …)
So there is a gap…
Uber raised roughly as much money in 5 years than ALL AG-innovation raused in VC
Examples: – Vestaron, protect crops and nature – Caribou Biosciences, precise , cheap gene editing – Farmobile: farmer can sell their data – It’s fresh (extend shelf life)
Collaboration is needed. Gov’t, Corporations, NGO, entrepreneurs, academia, media ***END

Panel discussion: Agriculture 2030 #futurefarming
Liveblogging, alle Zitate nur grob sinngemäß
***
Panelists: – Eveline, World Farmers Association – Christine – Corby, Food critic Atlantic Monthly Magazine – Adrian Percy, bayer R&D (links see below)
Eveline:
Most often people speak about us, here we can speak for ourselves. We need to feed many more people in 2030, we need to produce 60% more food by that time, we don’t have more land or water, so we need to deal with this problem. Innovation isn the answer, we need to be more efficient as wee need to produce more from less. we also need to produce food/income for the farmers themselves. Zambia produces lots of food, but is otvery food secure, but that is not true. Lots needs to be done here.
Christine:
We are a very young association that peomotes vertical farming. We procude tasty fresh food from stacked greenhouses. The idea came from BA´NASA to feed astronauts but it boomed on earth in the last 3 years. Vertical farms will be in every city in the developed world, maybe also the industrial world. Humidity and tempretature in soil-less spaces that are closed cycles are used and re-used/cleaned.
You can do it underground, you can crete green buildings, you can instal it in existing buildings. (…)
We should feed people where they live: in cities.
Corby:
The farther you get away from a farmers market the more blurry the image of a armer gets. Lots of immigrants run fars in the US (not enough african americans). The image is very different from the images at the supermarket. Consumers have no idea where their food comes from and when in grows. The avergae farmer in the US is 58 (in Japan 67 – infromation from yestrefay, Oliver). many dairy farers in small productions are women but cannot make a living from it. They need a job for health insurance. 70%, 2 years ago, had internet access. Technology and the makers movement may attract young peopple to be farners or food producers. There are many startups in this area now. teaching farmers how food and technology connet is important.
Adrian (bayer):
2030 is so yesterday for us in R&D, we have that set up, let me talk about 2050.
Farmers need to speak up, their liveliehoods are threatened by public opinions.
Kids have little appreciation for Sienece n general and food specially. csence and food can lead to a career and we educate kids and teachers about this. Transparency is important. We also educate our employees as advocates for modern agriculture.
(I’ll skip the Q&A, Ths is somewhat to ‘flimsy’ to liveblog…)

BAYKOMM #futurefarming Pressekonferenz
Liveblogging, alles eher grob sinngemäß
Intro / Kommunikationschefin Beth Roden
Liam Condon, President Crop Sciences
We all used to be farmers or hunters, only recently this has changed.
This is because farmers do a good job and the others can be journalists, lawyers etc.
This is done by using innovation and technology.
In 35 years the earth will ‘win’ another 3 billion people the population rising to 10 billion.
We need to feed them.
Consumption patterns change. More processed food and more proteine.
Arable land is limited, it cannot grow with the population.
we need to feed more people with less land per capita.
Climate change reduces yield by 17%.
Increased pressure by pests and weeds
Increase in food demand by 60%
So:
We need to prodice more while protecting the environment.
Global sinkende Preise wg.
I. Innovation
Purpose:
Shaping the future of Farming
Innovation
seeds
crop protection
services (!)
=>
Using a spread of tehnologies (chemistry, biology, Traits, Breeding) to adress weed control, disease management, pest control, yeald enhancement & stress resistance
Key: It has to work and it has to be safe.
The pipeline of developments filled till 2020.
Geneticakly modified (6) and natural seeds (5) are balanced in numbers till 2020.
e.g. 9 products of all types during the lifecycle of a soy plant. Additionally: consulting and financing.
Budget at ca. 5% of sales.
R&D 1.1 billion EUR in 2016 planned, increasing since 2012 (0.7 bn)
“Our belief: Innovation is a driver for growth.” – ensure continuous innovation – breeding infrastructure, fast and best in class helping the farmers – best facilities to support reserach outcomes
II. Sustainability
III. Collaboration
GRDC Australia, 5 year strategic collaboration, weed management innovation, talennt exchange (doctorates)
targenomix
spinn-off of Max-Plack-Institues, reserch on targets in plant metabolism fro crop protection
Embrapa
Brasil, pollineator health (bees etc.) , soy bean health
Open innovation
-WeSolve
Startups and Univesities – Grants4Targets (protections) – Grants4Traits (seeds)
financial or know-how (regulatory, toxicology, safety)
Venture Capital
Flagship Ventures
Trendlines
anteacapital
?Flintstone ventures (muss was anders sein)
Interdisciplinary approcaes
Combine: Bio / Chemical / Engineering / data sciences
“Very promising and hard to manage. weare very covinced about thos idea.”
e.g. – high-tech breeding infrastructre – targeted genome optimization – computational life sciences (CLS) / big data interpretation
CLS as a meta discipline to cover all working areas.
Digital farming (looging at the field, not the lab as CLS)
- capture potetial of every hectare – reduce environmental footprint of farming – dive economic results with data and analytics – real time data: detect plant stress via satellite imagery
500 million smallholders often for substistence
enabling them to produce food where it is needed most
no one company can fix this
infrastructure problems
finance
training – basic problems that need tp be fixed
Pilots with partners working along the value chain helping them to be sustainable.
They face complex problems.
India: creen chili e
Kenya: Potatoes etc.
Ethiopia: vegetables
“They have no toilets but everyoine has a mobile phone”: bring infromation fast to everybody.
All needs to be in line with local agricultural practices and cultures.
Technology comes last here.
We are committed to doing more in this area.
“Bayer ForwardFarming”: Demoonstrating susutainable agriculture in real farms and fostering dialogue. – Integrated crop solutions – reducing soil erosion through buffer strips – manageing waste water – increasing biodiversity – hman protection – knowledge exchange
Product Stewardship – safe use of procucts
ending in – safe disposal of contrainers
Bee care – active for decades – multi stakeholder approach – feed abee / biodiversity – healthy hives (reserach) – …. (will have more on this tomorrow)
Bayer Ag Education Program – Youth Ag Summit – agLearn Online too – Baylabs student lab – Agriculture Science Scholarships

Meine Antwort:
