GROW talks: Futurist farming #futurefarming
Liveblogging, quotes just roughly accurate…
On water
Water use grows, pumping groundwater occurs above the sustainable level
Big problems in India and China
The ‘cloud’ are lots of computers in buildings.
Refining/growing ethanol uses water.
Corn needs to be irrigated.
120 liters of water for one liter of ethanol.
There is a “global farms Race” (book)
40+ acres of land are lost every day on the rims of cities.
This is accompanied by deforstation.
Solutions: – Conversation – Reuse: It’s only wastewater because we don’t know how to use it – Desale: expensive – improved efficiency (sub surface irrigation) – genetic enigineering (takes 10 years to ertify a new organism, excludes smaller companies…, no universities…) – Price (book: Unquenchable): era of delocation of water

Planetary resources
Regular and reliable information about planet’s resources including growth in farms
lots of data, but local and ‘trapped’.
existing space based systems have been repurposed, but they are not optimised for this
We measure from space and try to scale on a global level to provide information.
Needed:
low cost options to bring private sensors into space
This is what we try to provide.
Investors: LarryPage, Richard Branson, Govt of Luxemburg
Rich Data Sets & machine learning, we have no data sets yet.
Thermographic and (???) imaging
measurements day AND night (not on the market today)
detection for crop stress
hyperspectral imaging : more information on crop conditions
measuring makes managing possible and decreases ecological footprint
BAYER is a R&D partner: decision support engine
Seattle & Luxemburg
we can build the needed spacecraft and all the IP is ours.
2 initial spacecraft are awaiting launch
affordable information for growers
VC Fund focusing on food innovation
Transform the food value chain
secure, safe, sustainable
we need to produce mre food in the next 40 years than we poduced in the last 8000 years
if a sector doe snot innovate the innovation weill come from outside
Long adoption ccyles: a farmer makes 40 major decisions in his lifetime about crops/investments
so this is no typical field for VCs
not many experienced entrepreneurs in this field
the scope is global -> complexity
4 years ago almist no VC activity in this field, now 4.6 bn Dollars
50% go into last mile delivery
5% go into drones (by guess, OG)
AG is 10% of global GDP but only 3.5% of VC capital goes there
(healthcare is 12% and 12% …)
So there is a gap…
Uber raised roughly as much money in 5 years than ALL AG-innovation raused in VC
Examples: – Vestaron, protect crops and nature – Caribou Biosciences, precise , cheap gene editing – Farmobile: farmer can sell their data – It’s fresh (extend shelf life)
Collaboration is needed. Gov’t, Corporations, NGO, entrepreneurs, academia, media ***END
